To Reclaim the High Ground:

Tom GilsonOur culture increasingly considers Jesus Christ irrelevant. Why? We have lost the high ground. Reclaiming it has become American Christianity's most urgent strategic task, crucial for everything else we do.

What is this "High Ground?" I will describe it in depth in a forthcoming book (read the introduction here). In short, it's based on the familiar principle of strategic positioning: those who fight from higher ground win more battles.

Christians in the Western world have lost the high ground in two crucial respects:

The Ethical High Ground

We have lost our position of moral leadership in our culture. That is partly a matter of reality and also partly of perception. Either way, understanding and responding to this loss is crucial to our witness for Jesus Christ.

The Intellectual High Ground

Though once we held intellectual leadership in our culture, the memory of that has long since faded. Now it seems almost absurd to think of Christianity standing in that position. Yet Christians have more strength in this area today than most realize.

These concepts are rooted in the Bible and in Christian history. Both depend heavily on our relationships with God, and on significant prayer and deep discipleship. It is time we took a strategic look at them—and reclaimed them for Jesus Christ.
